Are you eligible—and what exactly do you get?

Who qualifies?

  • SMUD residential customers in good standing
  • Home located in SMUD service territory
  • Install an eligible battery (e.g., Tesla Powerwall)
  • Enroll within 90 days after PTO
  • Commit to 3 years of participation

We’ll confirm eligibility and help with enrollment paperwork.

What you get

  • One-time enrollment incentive: nameplate kWh × 80% × $500 (capped at $10,000 per household)
  • Quarterly payments for Tesla Powerwalls: up to $110 / $220 / $330 for 1 / 2 / 3+ units
  • Backup reserved: SMUD leaves a 20% minimum after events
  • Option to renew after the initial term

What to expect

  • SMUD may briefly discharge your battery during peak hours

Prefer not to purchase? Our financier offers a prepaid lease where the third-party owner may apply federal incentives and depreciation, then reflect those benefits as an upfront discount on your price. Combine this with SMUD’s one-time enrollment incentive and, for Tesla Powerwall®, quarterly payments—often the most affordable path to resilient backup.

These answers are based on current SMUD materials and may change with funding or program updates.

How is the one-time enrollment incentive calculated?
SMUD calculates: nameplate battery kWh × 80% × $500, capped at $10,000 per household. Example: Two Tesla Powerwalls (≈27 kWh) → 27 × 0.8 × $500 = $10,800, capped at $10,000.
Do all batteries get quarterly payments?
Recurring quarterly payments are currently specific to Tesla Powerwall models: up to $110 (1 PW), $220 (2 PWs), or $330 (3+ PWs) per quarter during the initial term. Other eligible brands can receive the one-time enrollment incentive but not the quarterly payments.
What’s the commitment to keep the incentive?
Minimum 36 months of participation. If you unenroll early, SMUD may require a pro-rated repayment of the one-time incentive.
Will SMUD use my battery during an outage?
No. SMUD events occur during normal grid operation, not outages. SMUD maintains a 20% reserve minimum so your system keeps backup capability.
When are incentives paid?
The one-time enrollment incentive is paid after PTO and enrollment verification. Quarterly payments (Tesla) are paid each quarter; the first one is typically prorated based on your enrollment month. Processing timelines depend on SMUD.
How does the prepaid lease “upfront discount” work?
With a prepaid lease, a third-party owner may take federal incentives and depreciation, then reflect those benefits as an upfront discount off your price. This is not a homeowner tax credit. It can be paired with SMUD incentives and Tesla quarterly payments (where eligible).
Are incentives taxable? Will amounts change?
Yes—incentives are generally taxable. Please consult a tax professional. Funding is limited and amounts/terms may change at any time by SMUD.
What equipment is eligible?
We prioritize Tesla Powerwall for quarterly payments, and can propose other eligible batteries for the one-time incentive. For prepaid lease options, targeted combos include Tesla inverter + Powerwall 3 and Silfab panels, subject to approved vendor lists and financier approval.
