You do not need a contractor’s license to work as a solar sales representative in California. The Home Improvement Salesperson (HIS) registration is required for reps who engage in home improvement contracts and is straightforward to obtain through the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB). We can walk you through the process. If you’re already licensed or registered in a related trade (roofing, HVAC, windows), you may already meet the requirements.
Solar reps working under Solar With Watts earn 100% of the commission above the dealer cost (redline) on every deal they close. There is no base salary, no revenue split, and no cap on what you can earn. You are an independent 1099 contractor — your schedule, your territory, your income. Commission is paid after installation and Permission to Operate (PTO) is confirmed.
The two primary products are the Prepaid Solar Lease and Solar PPA. Both are structured as third-party ownership (TPO) agreements, which means the leasing or PPA company — not the homeowner — claims the federal 48E commercial investment tax credit through 2027 and passes the savings to the customer upfront. The homeowner does not need any tax liability to benefit. This eliminates the biggest objection that killed cash and loan deals after the residential ITC expired in December 2025. PPA products are also available with $0 down through LightReach, GoodLeap, and EnFin.
