You make one prepayment, and Maxwell Power owns your system for the first six years. During that time, Maxwell insures, monitors, and maintains it for you. At year six, full ownership transfers to you at no cost. It’s one of the ways to pay for solar in California that pairs a big upfront discount with a clear path to ownership.

Years 1–6
Maxwell owns and maintains it
Mars Home Solutions installs your system. Maxwell then insures, monitors, and maintains it, backed by a production guarantee. You enjoy the power and the backup.
-
Year 6
It becomes yours, free
Maxwell sends a formal Transfer Notice and full ownership passes to you at $0. Your manufacturer and workmanship warranties transfer to you at the same time.
Do energy communities get an extra discount on the Maxwell prepaid plan?
Yes, you may. If your home sits in a federally designated energy community, you may qualify for an additional discount on top of the standard prepaid savings.
Energy communities are areas the federal government has designated based on local economic and employment data. Many are tied to former fossil fuel industries, closed coal facilities, or brownfield sites. They’re spread across California, including plenty of everyday suburban and city neighborhoods.
What you should know
- Eligibility is based on your exact address, not your city or ZIP code.
- The bonus applies to solar, battery-only, and solar plus battery plans.
- Most homeowners don’t know they live in one until someone checks.
- Federal designations can change, so we confirm yours when we design your system.
How does Maxwell prepaid compare to cash, a loan, or a monthly PPA?
Maxwell prepaid sits between buying and renting. You pay less upfront than a cash purchase, you skip the monthly bill of a PPA, and you still end up owning the system. The tradeoff is that Maxwell owns it for the first six years.

The short version: if you want to own your system but don’t want to pay full price, Maxwell prepaid is usually the strongest fit.
Does the Maxwell prepaid plan work with my utility?
Yes. We offer the Maxwell Power prepaid plan to homeowners served by PG&E, SCE, SDG&E, SMUD, LADWP, and Pioneer Community Energy. Your utility doesn’t change how the plan works. It changes how we design your system, mostly around when your power costs the most.
Swipe the table to see every column →
| Utility | Where it serves | How most homes are billed | Highest-cost hours | Maxwell prepaid |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PG&E | Northern and Central California | Time-of-use | 4 to 9 p.m. | Available |
| SCE | Southern and Central California | Time-of-use | 4 to 9 p.m. | Available |
| SDG&E | San Diego County and southern Orange County | Time-of-use | 4 to 9 p.m. | Available |
| SMUD | Sacramento County | Time-of-day | 5 to 8 p.m. | Available |
| LADWP | City of Los Angeles | Tiered by default; time-of-use optional | Varies by rate plan | Available |
| Pioneer | Placer and El Dorado counties (power delivered by PG&E) | Time-of-use on PG&E delivery | 4 to 9 p.m. | Available |
Why the peak hours matter
Most California utilities charge the most in the late afternoon and evening, right as your solar winds down. A Powerwall stores energy earlier in the day so you can use it during those hours instead. Run your numbers in our Powerwall savings calculator.
What about local incentives?
Some utilities offer their own battery or solar incentives. Depending on your utility and eligibility, these may be combined with your Maxwell plan. We check what applies to your address when we design your system.

Do you need cash for the Maxwell prepayment, or can you finance it?
You can do either. Many homeowners finance the prepayment with a credit union loan, so it works like a regular monthly payment. Either way, you still get the full prepaid discount. The loan is simply how you cover the discounted amount.
Pay in Cash
Pay the discounted prepayment once and you’re done.
- No loan, no interest, no monthly payment
- Ownership still transfers to you at year 6 at $0
- Maxwell maintains the system the whole first six years
Best for: homeowners with savings who want zero ongoing payments.
Travis Credit Union
Finance your prepayment with a fixed-rate loan from one of California’s established credit unions.
- Fixed monthly payment that won’t change
- Terms up to 20 years
- We help you through the application start to finish
Best for: most homeowners who want the discount without paying it all at once.
Credit Human
A second credit union option with flexible terms.
- Fixed-rate terms up to 20 years
- No-payment period at the start of the loan
- Pay it down early anytime
- Pre-qualify online before you commit
Best for: homeowners who want breathing room before the first payment.
Your proposal shows the exact numbers. Rates and terms depend on the lender and your credit, so we lay out your prepaid price and any loan payment side by side before you decide.
What are the tradeoffs of the Maxwell prepaid plan?
The biggest tradeoff is time. You don’t own the system for the first six years, and that matters most if you might sell your home soon. Here’s what to weigh before you decide, and how we handle each one.
Maxwell owns it for the first six years
The system is on your roof and powering your home, but it isn’t legally yours until the year-6 transfer.
That’s also why Maxwell insures, monitors, and maintains it for you. Then it transfers at $0, warranties included.
Selling your home before year six adds a step
Your buyer takes over the agreement for the rest of Maxwell’s six-year term, then receives ownership at year 6. It’s one more item to cover in the sale.
We help you explain the transfer to your buyer and agent. If a move is likely soon, tell us up front so we can talk it through before you sign.
There’s a filing on the equipment
Because Maxwell owns the system during the term, it files a notice on the equipment. It’s on the panels and batteries, not on your home.
We explain exactly what’s filed and when it’s released, so nothing surprises you or a future buyer.
It takes more upfront than a $0-down PPA
A monthly PPA can start at $0 down. The prepaid plan asks for the discounted amount at signing, in cash or financed.
Financing through Travis Credit Union or Credit Human turns it into a fixed monthly payment, and you still end up owning it.
It’s a great fit if you…
- Plan to stay in your home six years or longer
- Want to own your system without paying full price
- Want backup power during outages and shutoffs
- Already have solar and want to add a Powerwall
- Like having maintenance handled for the first six years
It may not be right if you…
- Expect to sell your home in the next few years
- Want legal ownership from day one
- Need a $0-down option and don’t want to finance
- Rent your home rather than own it
- Live outside the utilities we serve
Not sure which side you’re on? We’ll give you a straight answer, even if it’s that another option fits you better.

What do California homeowners ask about the Maxwell Power prepaid plan?
Is HDM the same company as Maxwell Power?
Yes. HDM Renewable Finance rebranded as Maxwell Power in 2026. It’s the same company offering the same prepaid solar and battery plan, now under a new name.
Can I prepay for just a battery without new solar panels?
Yes. You can prepay for a Tesla Powerwall 3 by itself and keep your existing solar panels. Battery-only plans get the same upfront discount and the same $0 ownership transfer at year six. Use our Powerwall Calculator to estimate your savings.
What happens at year six of the Maxwell prepaid plan?
Ownership of your system transfers to you at no cost. Maxwell sends a formal Transfer Notice, and your manufacturer and workmanship warranties transfer to you at the same time. From then on, the system is fully yours.
Do I pay anything when ownership transfers to me?
No. The ownership transfer at year six costs $0. There’s no buyout and no final balloon payment, because your one prepayment already covered the system.
What if I sell my home before year six?
Your buyer takes over the agreement. They finish the rest of Maxwell’s six-year term and receive ownership at year six. We help you explain the transfer to your buyer and real estate agent so the sale stays simple.
Does the Maxwell prepaid plan put a lien on my house?
No. Maxwell files a notice on the equipment, meaning the panels and batteries, not on your home. It simply shows that Maxwell owns the system during the six-year term.
What if my system produces less power than expected?
You’re protected by a production guarantee during Maxwell’s six-year ownership term. If the system underperforms, Maxwell compensates you under the terms of your agreement. Your proposal spells out exactly how the guarantee works.
What is an energy community, and does my home qualify?
An energy community is an area the federal government has designated based on local economic and employment data. Homes in one may qualify for an extra discount on the Maxwell plan. Eligibility depends on your exact address, so we check it when we design your system.
Is a prepaid PPA the same as a prepaid solar lease?
For homeowners, they work almost the same way. Both mean you pay once upfront, a finance company owns the system for a set term, and then ownership transfers to you. Maxwell’s plan is structured as a prepaid PPA, which many installers call a prepaid lease. Compare every payment option.
Which companies offer prepaid solar in California?
Solar With Watts offers the Maxwell Power prepaid plan to homeowners across California. Installation is by Mars Home Solutions, and we serve PG&E, SCE, SDG&E, SMUD, LADWP, and Pioneer customers.

Is your power from MID, TID, or Roseville Electric?
We don’t currently offer the Maxwell prepaid plan to Modesto Irrigation District, Turlock Irrigation District, or Roseville Electric customers. Their lower electric rates usually make solar savings much smaller. See where we do serve.
